Coworking in Lausanne

Stephanie Booth, a social media consultant, prolific blogger and the force behind the upcoming Going Solo freelancing conference, has recently been given the chance to develop a coworking space in her hometown of Lausanne (incidentally, Steph’s grandmother is from Leeds!).

The space itself is a 120m² of spare office space in central Lausanne; perhaps enough to accommodate 15-20 people and a meeting room with a monhtly cost of around 4000 CHF. We’re hoping that we can help Stephanie develop this space with the experience and insight we’ve gained in establishing met:space over the last year.

In the meantime, here are Stephanie’s initial thoughts…

Neither Susan nor myself were “100% business people” when we started (and I’m happy to say we still aren’t). What we were/are is highly motivated to make something work and we were able to do just that by sitting around and asking the exact same questions you were asking. The answers are highly personal as the space you create will be highly personal. I mean, isn’t that the beauty of this movement? I have a house so we were able to finance using that. Other folks have had people signed up before they signed the lease. It can be a bit of a juggle but you can do it if you are determined to make it happen.

    Best of luck to you!

Thanks Jacob - we’ll keep you posted as Stephanie’s project progresses…however, I’d love your comments on the Old Broadcasting House proposition and and insights and advice you might have :)

One of the important things to consider is the sort of people that will be applying for their share of the coworking space: is the space aimed particularly at freelancers, small design companies that are looking to downsize or upsize, students that have just finished their studies, etc.

Each different target group will of course have different ideas of how much they want to spend, according to their current incomings/outgoings.

How much will the co working space cost compared to a small office space? What else is on offer in Lausanne that may be an alternative to your coworking space?

For me in Leeds the Old Broadcasting House is a great opportunity as a nearly-graduated student to integrate into a thriving creative community, and get coworking!

Best of luck to you Stephanie, keep us updated :)
